When is the best time to go diving in Gili Trawangan?
The good news is that there is no single “wrong” season for diving around the Gili Islands. Scuba diving is possible throughout the year, and each season has its own advantages.
Gili Trawangan is surrounded by some of Indonesia’s most accessible tropical dive sites, with regular sightings of green and hawksbill turtles, reef sharks, moray eels, clownfish, octopus, cuttlefish and colourful reef fish.
However, sea conditions, visibility, water temperature and marine life can change throughout the year.

Gili Trawangan Diving: What Is the Best Season?
In general, the dry season from May to October is considered the most popular period for visiting the Gili Islands.
During these months, conditions are often favourable for diving, with generally good visibility and plenty of sunshine between dives.
That doesn’t mean you should avoid Gili Trawangan during the rainy season.
From approximately November to April, tropical showers can occur, but rain does not necessarily mean poor diving conditions. Weather around the islands can change quickly, and it is quite common to have rain at one time of day and excellent diving conditions later.
For divers, the most important factors are usually wind, waves, currents and local sea conditions, rather than simply whether it is raining.
January: Tropical Diving in the Low Season
January is part of the wetter season in Lombok and the Gili Islands.
You can expect occasional heavy tropical rain, cloudy periods and changing sea conditions. However, there are still days when the weather is calm and diving conditions are enjoyable.
The lower number of tourists can also mean a quieter atmosphere on Gili Trawangan.
Good for: Divers who prefer fewer crowds and a relaxed island experience.
Keep in mind: Weather and visibility can be more variable than during the dry season.
February: Quiet Gili Trawangan Diving
February is generally one of the quieter months on Gili Trawangan.
Rain showers remain possible, but they rarely mean that the island is closed for diving. Dive operators assess conditions every day and choose suitable sites according to the weather and currents.
If you don’t mind some tropical rain, February can be an excellent time to experience the Gilis without the peak-season crowds.
Good for: Budget-conscious travellers, backpackers and divers looking for a quieter trip.
March: Changing Conditions and Fewer Crowds
March marks the transition toward the drier part of the year.
Weather conditions can still be unpredictable, but the number of sunny days generally starts increasing.
For underwater photographers and macro enthusiasts, quieter periods can be particularly enjoyable because you can spend more time searching for smaller marine life such as nudibranchs, moray eels and other reef creatures.
Good for: Experienced divers, underwater photographers and travellers who prefer a quieter island.
April: The Start of the Better Weather
April is often a good transition month for diving in Gili Trawangan.
The rainy season is gradually coming to an end and conditions can become more settled.
The islands also begin getting busier as more travellers arrive for the dry season.
Good for: Travellers looking for a balance between favourable weather and fewer crowds.
May: Excellent Time for Diving in Gili Trawangan
May is one of our favourite months for diving around the Gili Islands.
The weather is generally becoming drier, the sea can be calm and underwater conditions are often very pleasant.
It is also a great period for beginners because comfortable surface conditions can make the entire experience—from boat rides to descending underwater—more enjoyable.

June: Great Conditions for Divers
June is firmly within the dry season.
Sunny days, generally favourable sea conditions and good diving make this a popular month for visitors.
You can explore several different dive sites around the three Gili Islands, depending on your certification level and the conditions on the day.
Typical encounters can include:
- Green turtles
- Hawksbill turtles
- Reef sharks
- Moray eels
- Clownfish
- Octopus
- Cuttlefish
- Nudibranchs
- Colourful tropical reef fish
Good for: Beginners, certified divers, families, couples and dive courses.
July: Peak Diving Season
July is one of the busiest periods on Gili Trawangan.
The combination of European summer holidays and dry-season weather brings many travellers to the island.
Diving conditions are often excellent, but popular dive sites can be busier.
If you are travelling during July, booking your diving in advance is recommended—especially if you want to complete a full certification course.
Good for: Almost everyone, provided you don’t mind the busier island atmosphere.
August: Busy but Excellent for Diving
August is another major travel month for the Gili Islands.
The weather is generally dry and the island has a lively atmosphere. It is a great time to combine scuba diving with the other activities Gili Trawangan has to offer.
Because August can be busy, it is worth planning your diving ahead of time.
For certified divers, it is a particularly good opportunity to combine several fun dives with an SSI Advanced Open Water Diver course if you want to improve your skills and explore deeper or more challenging dive sites.
September: One of the Best Months to Dive
September is often overlooked by travellers who concentrate their holidays around July and August.
For divers, however, September can be an excellent month.
The weather is still generally favourable, the sea can be calm and the island may feel less crowded than during the peak summer period.
If you want a combination of good diving conditions and a slightly quieter Gili Trawangan, September is worth considering.
Good for: Beginners, dive courses, experienced divers and underwater photographers.
October: The End of the Dry Season
October is another transition month.
The weather can still be excellent, although conditions become more variable as the year progresses.
For many travellers, October offers a nice balance between the dry season and the quieter atmosphere of the low season.
It can also be a good time to take a scuba diving course before the wetter months arrive.
November: Can You Dive in Gili Trawangan in the Rainy Season?
Yes.
This is one of the most common questions we receive.
Rainy season does not automatically mean that diving stops.
November can bring tropical showers and changing weather, but diving is still possible when sea conditions are suitable.
The important thing is that dive centres check the conditions and select appropriate dive sites.
If you are flexible with your schedule, a rainy-season trip can still give you some fantastic underwater experiences.
Good for: Travellers who don’t mind unpredictable weather and prefer a quieter island.
December: Christmas and New Year Diving
December brings a mixture of tropical weather and increased tourist activity because of the Christmas and New Year holidays.
Although this is technically within the wetter season, diving remains possible when conditions allow.
If you are visiting Gili Trawangan over Christmas or New Year, remember that this is a popular travel period and accommodation and diving can become busy.
Booking ahead is recommended.
What Is the Water Temperature in Gili Trawangan?
Water temperatures around the Gili Islands are generally warm throughout the year.
For most divers, a 3 mm wetsuit is a comfortable choice, although your ideal exposure protection depends on your personal tolerance, dive duration and the conditions on the day.
The warm tropical water makes Gili Trawangan particularly suitable for people trying scuba diving for the first time.
You don’t need to be an experienced diver to enjoy the underwater world here.
What About Visibility?
Visibility around Gili Trawangan can vary considerably.
There is no guarantee that a particular month will always have better visibility because underwater conditions are influenced by weather, currents, tides and other local factors.
On good days, visibility can be excellent, allowing you to appreciate the reefs, turtles and other marine life around the islands.
Experienced local dive guides know the sites and conditions and can select the best available location for the day.
Is Gili Trawangan Good for Beginner Divers?
Absolutely.

And remember: a rainy-season forecast does not mean it will rain all day.
Tropical weather can change quickly.
So, When Is the Best Time to Dive Gili Trawangan?
If we had to choose a few months for the best overall combination of weather, diving and atmosphere, we would look closely at:
May, June, September and October.
But the most important thing is not the calendar.
Gili Trawangan is a year-round diving destination.
