What Is the Open Water Diver Course?

The SSI Open Water Diver course is the first step toward becoming a certified scuba diver.

You don’t need previous diving experience. Your instructor will teach you the knowledge and practical skills you need step by step, starting with basic scuba equipment and safety procedures before progressing to your first ocean dives.

You’ll learn how to assemble and use scuba equipment, understand diving theory and safety, control breathing and buoyancy, clear a regulator and mask, communicate underwater, respond to common diving situations and conduct recreational dives.

Your 3-Day Open Water Course

Day 1 – Theory and Confined-Water Training

Your first day introduces you to scuba fundamentals. You’ll complete the required theory and practice essential skills in confined water, becoming comfortable with your equipment and underwater breathing before heading to the ocean.

Day 2 – Your First Ocean Dives

You’ll complete your first two open-water dives around the Gili Islands, putting your training into practice while learning to move comfortably underwater, control buoyancy and dive safely with your buddy and instructor.

Day 3 – Final Ocean Dives and Certification

You’ll complete two more ocean dives and demonstrate the skills required for SSI Open Water Diver certification. Once all course requirements are successfully completed, you’ll become a certified SSI Open Water Diver.

Who Can Take the Open Water Course?

Previous experience: No previous scuba certification is required.

Swimming: You should be comfortable in the water and able to swim and tread water.

Medical screening: All students must complete the appropriate recreational diving medical screening questionnaire. Depending on your answers, medical clearance may be required.
